Makeup as Storytelling
Hello! My name is Alani Gaunt; I am a makeup artist and senior Cinema Studies and Studio Art student at Oberlin College. I am completing my senior thesis project in Makeup Design for Film, and as part of this project I have designed makeup for seven senior thesis films and am documenting my design process. The purpose of this blog is to share that documentation and to provide insight into the various elements, considerations, and influences that are part of my process. Each project that I have worked on this year will be given one post to show the development of the design and its implementation.
I have included some further information about my background and how I work in the About page of this blog, but for the purposes of this post it is most important to note that I am approaching makeup design as another important element of visual storytelling. Film conveys meaning through image; that meaning may be emotional, narrative, historical, or abstract. In creating the image, filmmakers first consider what they want that image to express. Makeup, the conscious manipulation of the personal physical image, is another layer with which the film can convey its meaning.
